FAQ

What kind of pants are good for hiking?

The main consideration for hiking pants is that they should feel comfortable on and easy to move in. Hiking pants made of moisture-wicking and fast-drying functional fabrics are ideal, convertible pants give you more options. While hiking pants typically suit a range of weather conditions, consider whether you need insulation for cooler, wetter conditions or if you want pants for hotter, drier climates.

What factors should you consider?

  • Summer trekking:
look for lighter functional stretch fabrics that allow good breathability and dry fast. Avoid cotton, which takes a long time to dry when wet. Natural and synthetic fibre blends are lightweight, pleasant to wear and provide good freedom of movement.
  • Spring, fall and winter trekking:
Softshell trekking pants are ideal here. They’re made of stretch woven fabrics, such as Salewa Durastretch, which consists of different layers with specific properties. These soft, breathable, and water-repellent fabrics offer all-day comfort, and some versions provide a certain amount of insulation. They are also quick to dry.
  • Weather protection DWR coatings:
We apply a PFC-free durable water-repellent (DWR) coating to the outside of most of our hiking pants. While hiking pants are not typically fully waterproof, the DWR coating offers enough water resistance to keep things comfortable. Note that DWR coatings tend to wear off over time, so it’s a good idea to re-apply a DWR treatment to ensure your hiking pants continue to perform. If you expect to encounter rain, sleet, or snow, then pack a pair of waterproof rain pants or consider using hardshell pants.
  • Features:
Think about the adjustment options you want on your hiking pants. Do you prefer an elasticated waistband or belt? Do you want adjustable ankle cuffs? Consider the number of pockets and where they are positioned. Do they have secure zips? Are they big enough to accommodate your phone, map, or GPS device?

How tight should hiking pants be?

Look for hiking pants that fit closely without being restrictive. Baggier pants tend to flap about and snag on rocks or scrub. Design features like articulated knees and a gusseted crotch give you better freedom of movement. Make sure your hiking pants don’t hinder your movement or rub uncomfortably.

What to consider when buying hiking pants for winter use?

In colder temperatures, look for warmer softshell hiking pants and consider packing long baselayer underwear.

What color is best for hiking pants?

The color of your hiking pants can affect how hot they feel in the sun. For hot, sunny days we recommend light colors to keep you cooler. For colder days and winter or alpine use, we recommend black and dark colors that absorb heat from the sun, keeping you warmer.
