TOM RABL

Tom is from Kitzbühel, Austria. He has been a mountain guide since 2008, a profession he shares with his wife. Tom has spent quite some time reflecting on the interplay between lightness and safety, experience and preparation, and has developed a well defined framework. “My role is to take care of what happens under the hood of an ascent. My purpose is to support who comes with me to enable a fully experience of the mountains. That’s the key of progression.”

JASON ANTIN

Jason Antin, 38, grew up in Massachusetts, on the east coast of the United States. In his younger years, he had no interest in the mountains. His heart beat for traditional American sports, especially football, for which he trained up to 60 hours a week. It was after graduation that Jason discovered his passion for the mountains, first as a volunteer, accompanying disabled adults, then as a guide.

When you want to go further and experience something new, you rely on someone, who is an expert and starts this journey with you. Up there, in the mountains, this is a mountain guide. A professional mountaineer, whose job it is to accompany others at high altitude, on rock, ice and snow.

But does one 'do' mountain guiding or does one 'be' a mountain guide? The difference is subtle, but relevant. Let’s discover together what it takes to choose this life path.

A mountain guide is not just a service provider, who takes you wherever you want to go. A mountain guide is an experienced companion, someone who enables you to go further. This is why being a mountain guide is a life choice, something more than just a trade you pick to make ends meet. It takes experience and lightness, competence in the mountains and in understanding human beings.

YVONNE KOCH

Yvonne Koch comes from Arlberg, Austria, and has been a mountain guide since 2017. For sure, her previously shared experiences with her family played an important role in making this choice. But there was something more. “I love simplicity” Yvonne tells us. “I love lightness, beauty and feeling the raw power of nature. And there is a place where you can find these things all together: in the mountains.”

HANSPETER EISENDLE

Hanspeter Eisendle is a mountain guide since 1980. He lives in Sterzing/Vipiteno and started to explore his hometown mountains as a child, with his parents. For them “mountains” meant their hut and the nearby woods. But there was more to discover, up high, beyond the woods. That’s where Hanspeter found the space for his self-determination, for writing the story of his life.
